"Dogs were certainly a pest in the early days of cycling: largely because cyclists were such an unusual sight that they tended to be attacked on principle not just by village dogs but by villagers as well. Back in the 1890s the Belgian firm Auguste Francotte of Liège marketed the Vélodog anti-canine revolver for French cyclists. This fired a 5mm cartridge filled with pepper in the humane version, and a 5mm lead cartridge in the other sort : though evidently that wasn't up to the job, because they later increased it to 6mm. Sadly, I don’t think you’d get away with that nowadays."
